Navigating Inner Child Therapies For Healing Intergenerational Trauma

Initially when I decided to try and heal the root causes of my trauma I started seeing a Transpersonal Psychotherapist. I decided to do this because she was different to any therapist I had seen before and all  psychologists I had seen up to that point were using methods that weren't specific enough and was used on the general public such as cognitive behavioural therapy or just cognitive therapy. I needed something that went deeper and didn't just treat my occasional 'negative thinking'. Now that I know better, calling it negative thinking is over-simplistic and minimises what survivors of family violence go through. It's being triggered which is a trauma response. People who are survivors of family violence can be positive thinkers and even highly motivated individuals. A trigger is a response to something that has happened to that person not a true response to what is happening now.

So the Transpersonal psychotherapist practised inner child therapy on me which was a new age developed therapy. It is often referred to as Inner Child healing and this kind of therapy was a good start for me at the time but was only mildly better than cognitive therapy. I saw this therapist for a while but her methods were a little too flaky for me and the group she led (that I went to) felt more like a cult to me so I went back to see a new psychologist.

The new psychologist was really helpful and although I don't see them anymore we are still friendly with each other and I have recommended this therapist to other people. This psychologist had a bit more understanding for what I was going through. They were estranged from some members of their family too. Unfortunately they didn't always understand my need to talk about my experiences. This is common and this psychologist meant no harm, they just weren't trained to deal with a patient that had as much trauma and baggage as I do.

I then started seeing a specific trauma psychologist and here's where I started receiving various types of inner child therapy. I recieve a psychology based inner child therapy from my therapist (I'm not exactly sure what type but it works. The other type I recieve in my own time on youtube and this therapy is called RRP Inner Child Trauma Therapy.

There are a few different types of Inner Child therapies that are psychology practices. Here are some I have found on the internet.

  • Internal Family Systems
  • EMDR
  • Sensorymotor Psychotherapy
  • Somatic Work
  • Gestalt Work
  • Art Therapy
Just to name a few. It's hard to find books that are exactly on my type of experience but reading up on these types of therapies helps. The RRP Inner Child Trauma therapy I find online, made internet famous by therapist Patrick Teahan, helps a lot too.

Here is a video where he shares oddly specific childhood trauma symptoms. I'm finding more and more therapies that help people heal from abusive dysfunctional family systems and it not only helps me, but when I share this kind of stuff it helps others to heal whilst raising awareness on this societal issue.
